Joining the club
Thomastown Paddlers is a great place to meet and chat with other people while you also get in some exercise. Safety within the club is of utmost importance and all paddlers should look out for one another while on the water or on the hills. SWIMMING is essential before you decide to try out the sport. The club catters for beginners on Tuesday evenings during the Summer months when daylight hours allow between the months of April - September. Once paddlers reach a level off suitable competence there are then avenues for them to get out on the water up to 3 times per week and during the winter months. Boat and equipment rental at present is €5 per night. Membership is requested following 4 trial nights on the water and costs €50 per senior and €30 per junior. NOTE: Newcomers will not be catered for during the Winter and Early Spring months. Those interested should make contact with the club around early April each year.
What is Marathon Racing??
As mentioned earlier the club is mainly a canoe racing club. There are 12 domestic races around Ireland each year and paddlers can gain points for both their class and club when they compete. Beginners need not worry about performance as these races catter for all abilities with classes dependent upon type of boat and ability. These races are on average 5 miles in length or an hours paddling on the water. As canoeists improve, they can then take part in tougher races in Ireland and abroad with many aiming to complete the Liffey Descent each year which is an 18 mile race on the River Liffey.
